Capital One Bowl: Live Blog
LSU and Penn State face off today in the Capital One Bowl on your local ABC affiliate. I will be running a live blog as the game unfolds. It probably won’t help you much if you don’t watch the game, but we’ll see. This is my first attempt at such.
11:50 – WBRZ is taking a look at what LSU has coming back next year. For some reason, they are excited that we have nothing coming back but a bad QB.
11:55 – It’s that awkward time when the Star Spangled Banner starts playing in the middle of the pregame. You MUST stop what you are doing and let the song play. Poor guys. We now head to network coverage while I fix a hot dog.
12:01 – “The Lions! The Tigers! New Years! Oh My!” Great. We have Bras Nessler and Todd Blackledge on the call today. Blackledge looks like he slept in his suit last night.
12:02 – At least we have Erin Andrews to tell us the the field is a mess.
12:07 – The field looks like a mud wrestling pit. It’s ridiculous.
12:12 – Penn State has to burn a timeout 54 seconds into the game. The Hybrid gets a part of the punt to put LSU in good field position.
12:18 – Well, punts will not be rolling today. As Nessler said, splashdown.
12:22 – What a weak pass interference call against the Hybrid. That whiney #6 was asking for a flag earlier when he dropped a ball. I’d punch him in the nose.
12:26 – I think the Geek Squad coomercial where the chick fixes the computer “with her mind” is kind of funny.
12:28 – Jordan Jefferson can’t decide if he is going to take the sack or try to get it picked. Goes with door #2. Triple coverage. Passing is an adventure today.
12:35 – This game is really terrible. It’s one of those old school field position battles that Paterno used to coach in the 20s.
12:37 – If I had HD, I could give you a better description of the slop out there. The grass is in clumps. It isn’t stopping Chad Jones from killing people out there though.
12:39 - Does Paterno recruit the Amish? I’m astounded to see this many white kids on a football team in 2010.
12:40 – Nice blocking by the FB for a long Penn State touchdown. Someone figured out how to pass. Peterson got caught with a double move.
12:43 - In the last 6 weeks, LSU still didn’t teach Jefferson how to run the option.
12:44 - Brandon LaFell is making Jordan Jefferson’s stat line look great. LSU with a big pass play, then a stupid Trindon Holiday end around call that Nessler calls a reverse.
12:49 – Vintage Penn State defense? Is Michael Cole calling the game? LSU gets on the board with a FG.
12:54 – Big “Erin Andrews” chant during her interview with the Capital One guy.
1:01 – Guy in the stands has a Mississippi State hat on with his face painted blue and white. Your team is turning around. You can’t sport colors for another conference.
1:05 – The kid in those FloTV commercials reminds me of one of mine, but I am not sure which one.
1:12 – What the hell? They are going to review a ball spot? LSU went from catching a break to giving up a first down, I think. They were definitely the beneficiaries of some bad officiating.
1:14 – Overturned. First down. You think anyone else can get that reviewed besides Paterno?
1:19 – Penn State is up 10-3 after a good drive that ends in a FG.
1:22 – Yes, referees carry more than one flag. Jordan Jefferson gets called for intentional grounding when he isn’t in the pocket. Rueben Randle almost bails him out with an impossible catch that he can’t quite make.
1:25 – LSU has now dropped 3 potential interceptions. They have to make these plays. As I am typing this, they drop the 4th one. That’s a sloppy ball on a sloppy field.
1:28 – Penn State doesn’t make the same mistake and picks off Jordan Jefferson on a tipped ball to set up first down at the 23 for the Nittany Lions. Tiger fans are going to be ready to run Miles out of town at the half.
1:33 – Did they just review a penalty? Can you do that?
1:37 – If LSU can manage to hold PSU to a field goal, that’s a win for the defense.
1:38 – Joe Paterno is making me cold. Put on a hat, old man. You are going to catch a cold or something. Speaking of cold, LSU calls timeout to ice the kicker.
1:43 – Paterno is yelling at Erin Andrews to hurry up. Might be time to change his adult diaper.
HALFTIME
2:05 - I’m watching the end of the Auburn game before I get back to LSU-Penn State.
2:08 – Nice job by the Tigers downing the ball at the 2 yard line. Maybe the D can catch a ball and get us a pick 6.
2:16 – Penn State is hammering the ball right down LSU’s throat. Come on Tigers.
2:19 – ABC just showed a graphic on Penn State running backs. Man, those guys stunk in the NFL.
2:22 – I can’t get on board with this Taco Bell diet unless it works like an anorexic diet.
2:23 – LSU misses a deep pass and then fumbles on the next play.
2:37 - Thank the Lord for Brandon LaFell because every other LSU receiver stinks. Of course, I missed that touchdown drive because kids are in my yard fighting! What the hell, New Year?
2:45 – Trindon Holiday shows us something with a little punt return. Let’s capitalize at the Capital One Bowl!
2:49 – Tolliver shouldn’t even be out there at this point. He couldn’t catch a mouse with a block of cheese.
2:50 – Tolliver with a great deep catch to get the ball to the 1. Keep him in!
2:52 – LSU with all the momentum and urgency takes the lead 17-16 with 12:49 left in the game.
2:57 – Penn State with back to back penalties after none up until this point.
2:58 – Paterno just gave the ref a bump! Give him more pudding!
3:00 – After further review, the referees corrected the down when they didn’t need to. Crazy replays going on here. Not as crazy as the Auburn – NW game ended.
3:06 – JJ runs for a first down instead of taking a sack. By Gawd, we might just have a QB here. If we could only have 6 weeks to prep for every game.
3:12 – A whining #6 gets another cheap pass interference call against Peterson. Come on Tigers. Penn State is moving the ball too easily in this slop.
3:15 – The defense is getting picked apart. Let’s go ahead and give up the FG attempt so we can try to score.
3:18 – First and goal Nittany Lions. Letting this one slip away.
3:22 – Just painful to watch a game slip away. 3rd and goal at the 2.
3:24 – What’s there for Penn State to even think about? Kick the FG. Here we go. Timeout.
3:26 – Penn State takes the lead with 57 seconds to go. The ensuing kick off return will tell us whether or not LSU can pull of the win. No reason to think they will though. I predict Jefferson throws a pick to seal the loss.
3:29 – Holiday returns it to the 40. They have a chance. Just throw to LaFell and not Tolliver.
3:31 – Apparently, it’s ok just to lay on the ball to run out the clock. I don’t know what the officials are looking at.
3:32 – Nice job by the LSU players to just give up on the hook and ladder. Congrats Penn State on the win. 19-17. Time to listen to the post game show as the negaTigers come out to rip Les Miles.
